Healing Field

Honorees

The origin of the Healing Field is:  Paul Swenson, owner of Colonial Flags, first created this tribute to the lost loved ones of  September 11th.  Mr. Swenson wanted to display the magnitude of lives lost on 911 and placed 3000 flags on several acres of land, one to represent each victim of the Twin Tower’s attack.   Friends and family members gathered from around the nation for a joining of spirits to remember and to heal.

The Field of Memories-Healing Field is a 10-day event planned to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday.  This event will include a field of 100 American flags displayed at Esper Peterson Park (corner of Grand and old Grand Avenue).  Each flag will represent a lost loved one, neighbor, friend, co-worker, or veteran as noted by the flag’s sponsor.  Sponsors will be encouraged to display photos, mementos, and other accompaniments at the foot of their flags.  A short opening ceremony is scheduled for May 20th, 2007 at 2:00pm with a guarding of the flags by Paul Habel, a musical prelude, and a presentation of Colors by the Naval Hospital Great lakes Color Guard. The invocation will be lead by Gurnee Mayor Kristy Kovarik and speakers will include gurnee Breakfast Exchange president Michael Oster, and field dedication by US Marine Major robert S Weiler.  Candace rutkowski and friends will accompany the reading of all honorees names with a flute trio.  The closing ceremony and flag pick-up will be on May 29th from 6:00 pm until approximately 7:30 pm. Spotlighting the Woodland Middle School band performing a "concert in the Park" by the Woodland Middle School Band and a closing prayer by Pastor Stu Merkel of the Gurnee Community Church.

Flags (3’ by 5’) are available on a first come basis and are yours to treasure upon the closing of the event.  The price is $25.00.  The Heroes of Freedom Memorial, located on the site of the old Gurnee Police Station, has collaborated with the GBEX club and is offering a K.I.A. engraved brick and a Field of Memories flag for the price on $ 100.00. Checks should be made out to GBEX and mailed to Gurnee Breakfast Exchange Club,   P. O. Box 494, Gurnee, IL 60031, or dropped off at any Great Lakes Credit Union location.
